Webinar recap: The current state of science for platelets and the concept of blood health
The mission of Patient Blood Management is focused on improving patient outcomes through optimal blood use (OBU), which means managing a patient’s blood to the best of our ability with the goal of removing the need for transfusion.
In a recent webinar that is now available on-demand, Dr. Carolyn Burns and Carolyn Clancy, co-founders of Clinical Collaborative Consulting, compare the risks and benefits of transfusion medicine and how pillars of patient blood management affect optimal blood use OBU, leading to stronger operations and an increase in patient safety. They also discuss the concept of “blood health” and the science of platelets and platelet transfusion in specific patient subsets, including patients with thrombocytopenia and the associated outcomes.
Our hope is that through these webinars, you learn important information to share with your team that results in two things:
- The introduction of multidisciplinary strategies within PBM to increase optimal blood use
- Improvement in patient outcomes through patient-centric decision-making
Mike Chechile, medical lab scientist and attendee of the webinar says, “Dr. Burns did an excellent job explaining the circumstances where platelet transfusion therapies would and would not be appropriate.”
