For a number of years, working at Kinnser Software “was the best kept secret in Austin,” said Maggie Blair, human resources manager for the software developer.
But the beans were spilled two years ago when the company was named to the American-Statesman’s Top Workplaces of Greater Austin.
“Recognition through Top Workplaces and other community programs has revealed the high caliber team we’ve assembled here, along with the quality software products we’re designing and supporting,” Blair said. “This visibility into our company strengthens our ability to recruit and makes our current employees prouder to call Kinnser Software its employer.”
Area employees now have until July 11 to nominate their company for Top Workplaces at www.statesman.com/topworkplaces.
Top Workplaces, now in its fifth straight year, recognizes Central Texas employers that stand for the best in leadership, vision, an employee-centered culture and other qualities. Any type of employer — private company, nonprofit, government or school — is eligible as long as it has 50 or more employees in Central Texas.
If a company agrees to participate, the Statesman’s partner WorkplaceDynamics LLP will conduct anonymous employee surveys, analyze the results and rank the top 85 Austin-area employers, based on size. Winners will be announced in a special section of the newspaper in November and the information will live online all year.
The recognition has helped employers such as Kinnser attract the best possible talent.
“One example of a recently hired Kinnser employee is that while living in Minnesota and researching the Austin job market, he saw us listed as a Top Workplace, checked out our website and ended up applying for a job here as a software developer,” Blair said. “In this situation, the award resulted in making us known to someone who was not really looking at our industry of health care software. Being on the list not only calls attention to us, but it also provides insight into what it’s like to work here. It makes us look trustworthy, too, as it increases our reputation in Austin.”
Top Workplaces has also had a hand in retention.
“I think it validates our current practices and motivates us to continue to do what’s best for our employees and our customers,” she said. “Throughout our 10-year history, Kinnser’s employee turnover has been remarkably low. We work diligently to keep our employees engaged and feeling appreciated, and being recognized as a Top Workplace substantiates that what we’re striving to do is working.
“It is fulfilling to work somewhere where your hard work is reflected in patients receiving better care. We come to work because of the people we work for and the people we work with.”
Top Workplaces offers a few extra perks, too.
“It’s great that we can talk about being a Top Workplace during the interview process,” Blair said, “and we like being able to use the Top Workplace logo on our website and in recruiting material.”
