The top things you need to know about delirium

Written by Marcia Levetown, MD, MMM, HMDC, FAAHPM

Delirium is extremely common, especially among elderly patients.  More than 10% of elderly patients who are admitted to the hospital have delirium, and perhaps as many as 50% experience delirium at some time during hospitalization. Delirium is also the most frequent mental disorder among dying patients and a source of tremendous suffering for patients and families. Yet delirium is not well understood by most post-acute care professionals and consequently is rarely prevented or treated the way it should be.

Physician Marcia Levetown, MD, MMM, HMDC, FAAHPM has prepared an important tip sheet called The top things you need to know about delirium that will help you and your team recognize, prevent, and reverse delirium. The tip sheet is accompanied by an extensive bibliography that will provide you with a wealth of additional resources on this essential topic.

Read the free tip sheet and learn:

  • Which patients are at highest risk for delirium
  • How to distinguish delirium from dementia and depression
  • Medications that should not be used to treat delirium
